Transitional
Support
Sometimes women are not ready to go straight from the shelters to
living alone. To ensure a successful transition period, Bat
Melech operates a number of transition apartments. These
apartments give the women continued support while gradually easing
their level of dependency.
There are
usually only two or three families in
each transition apartment and are located in the same neighborhoods as
the shelters so that children can remain in the same schools and still
benefit from shelter activities. Both
women and their children
continue to receive therapy and psychological treatment from the
shelter staff while living in the apartments.
While the
rent of the apartments is covered by Bat
Melech , women are still encouraged to try to find ways to
financially support themselves as a way to integrate themselves into
society and the workforce.
A special
individualized program is created for
each woman, so that each step of her journey to an independent life is
monitored and guided. A detailed plan and set goals are created for
each woman so that she can have a clear map of her progress.
A
transitional apartment is just the
beginning of what is often a long personal and financial struggle.
Women come to
Bat Melech in a time of crisis
– and they are provided with a safe and rehabilitative
environment. However, the problems these women encounter do not end
when they leave the shelter, and neither does Bat Melech’s
involvement.
Over 100
women are still in contact with Bat
Melech, and continue to receive emotional and financial support from us
on a daily basis. Women and children participate in support groups and
specialized activities such as – trips, lectures and holiday
celebrations.
Bat Melech
activities provide a much needed
respite to the complicated and stressful lives of the women and
children who leave our shelter – and give them the strength
to
continue down their difficult paths.
Many
women and children who stay at our
shelter are impoverished upon entering the shelter, and are often much
worse off financially upon leaving.
By “adopting”
a
family and offering them ongoing
support, you will directly impact
and improve their lives. Please contact Bat Melech at office@batmelech.org
