About Bat Melech - Miklat

Bat Melech - Miklat was founded in 1995 as a non-profit organization by a group of Orthodox social activists ýworking to provide legal assistance for women in distress. They established Bat Melech - Miklat in response to ýthe urgent need of Orthodox women suffering from domestic violence for a refuge, protection from ýtheir violent spouses, and emotional and legal support.

Bat Melech - Miklat’þs goal is to provide shelter, ýsupport and rehabilitation in an environment designed for religiously Orthodox women and their ýchildren who are suffering from domestic abuse. Bat Melech - Miklat assists these women by helping them ýbring an end to the degradation, violence and fear that they have experienced, and regain the strength ýand confidence with which to rebuild their lives.

Any woman suffering from domestic abuse must contend with enormous difficulties in escaping an ýabusive relationship. These difficulties are even more daunting for orthodox women. Until Bat Melech - Miklat was established, battered Orthodox women had nowhere to turn to for help. For a number of ýreasons, Orthodox women in abusive relationships do not take advantage of the social services ýprovided for abused women. First, they fear the stigma associated generally with welfare services in ýthe Orthodox community. Second, they distrust non-religious authorities; the Orthodox community ýgenerally does not look kindly on members who seek outside help for domestic problems.

Moreover, ýthe unwritten policy of the Othodox community has been to contend that domestic violence cannot ýexist within its boundaries. This creates an atmosphere of secrecy and shame that silences and ýignores those who suffer, and condemns them to further abuse. Many Orthodox women fear that ýadmitting openly that their husbands beat them will negatively impact the religious community’s ýperception of their families (possibly even harming their children’s chances of finding a good ýmarriage partner, for example).

Bat Melech - Miklat was the first and only organization in Israel to respond to this urgent need when it provided ýapartments that served as shelters for abused Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox women.ý
ý
Today, Bat Melech - Miklat runs a network of shelters and safe havens that include social, financial, emotional, and legal assistance to woman and their children, who are victims of domestic violence.

Bat Melech - Miklat operates and educates to increase awareness to prevent domestic violence.

Noach Korman, Executive Director

Noach’s involvement in domestic violence began more than a decade ago during his work as a rabbinic advocate (the equivalent of a defense attorney in the rabbinic courts) in the legal aid department in Jerusalem. His encounters with observant women who were left with nowhere to go but back to their abusive husbands inspired him, together with Estanne Fawer, to open Bat Melech - Miklat, the first of its kind, in a single apartment in 1995. In 2000, the Ministry of Welfare officially recognized Bat Melech - Miklat and its efforts on behalf of the observant community. Bat Melech - Miklat recently opened its second women’s shelter.

In recognition of his work to combat and unveil the issue of domestic violence, Noach was featured in the Jerusalem newspaper Kol Ha’Ir in its special Passover 2005 insert called “Anonymous Stars – the 50 Jerusalem Heroes You Don’t Know.”

Noach Korman holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Shaarei Mishpat Law School in Israel. He is a licensed attorney and a member of the Israeli bar. Noach received authorization to serve as a rabbinical pleader in Israeli rabbinical courts by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and from the Harei Fishel Institute in Jerusalem. He has also studied at several Yeshivot in Israel, including Itri, Kfar Hassidim, and Kiryat Arba.

Noach lives in the Jerusalem suburbs with his wife and four children.
